Associate Chief Medical Officer for Health Equity
Crystal Cené, MD, is the chief administrative officer for health equity, diversity and inclusion at UC San Diego Health as well as the associate chief medical officer for health equity. Her research focuses on evaluating and implementing solutions that enhance patient and family-centered care, focusing on the disparities in care by race and socioeconomic status.

Professor and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine – Tucson and Executive Coach, Dr. Taylor Riall presented a talk entitled "Enjoying the Journey". The event was held at the Goldberg Auditorium Moores' Cancer Center in La Jolla, preceeded by a Faculty networking and the Women Faculty Awards session.
WiHS Summer Event 2020 - WiHS Retreat
Dr. Karen Van Hoesen (left), Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Dr. Melissa Bauman (right), Director of Women in Health Sciences from UC Davis, were our guest lecturers. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, our Summer Retreat 2020 was an online event, including streching and mindfulness excercises in the interval of lectures and breakouts sessions.

WiHS Winter Event 2018-2019
Kelle Moley. M.D. was our Winter 2018-2019 invited speaker and presented a talk entitled, “How to Build a Functional and Highly Productive Team” (Jan. 16, 2019). Dr. Moley is the Senior Vice-President and Chief Scientific Officer for the March of Dimes, and previously was the Chief of Basic Science Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Moley met with several groups from UCSD HS throughout the day, including the WiHS Steering Committee, and faculty from the Women in Neurosciences, Women in Anesthesia, Professors of Ophthalmology, and Professors of Reproductive Medicine. The event was held at the faculty club and was well-attended.
WiHS Spring Event 2019
UCSD Distinguished Professor of Medicine and former Dean of the Graduate Division, Dr. Kim Barrett, presented a workshop entitled, “You can’t always get what you want…but you can get what you need” Negotiation 101. There was a mix of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty that attended the event. This event was well attended with more than 100 registered. The event was held in Leichtag 107 and was catered. Survey respondents found the workshop to be valuable for their careers.

WIHS invited Dr. Amparo Villablanca, Professor and Lazda Endowed Chair of Women’s Cardiovascular Medicine and Director of Women in Medicine and Health Sciences at UC Davis, to be the invited speaker at the fall 2017 reception. Dr. Villablanca presented a seminar entitled, “Family-Flexible Policies to Enhance Academic Careers in Health Sciences”. Dr. Villablanca met with several groups from UCSD HS throughout the day, including the WIHS Steering Committee, Women in Neurosciences, Women in Surgery, Society for Advancement of Women in Anesthesia and the Department of Psychiatry Chair’s Advisory Committee on Diversity Issues.

Dr. Lamar Rutherford from the Rady School of Business and Dr. Lisa Eyler, Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Research Psychologist at the VA San Diego Healthcare System co-hosted our Spring event focused on Self-Promotion and Networking. Dr. Eyler gave a talk on the importance of Self-Promotion and Networking in academic medicine and some challenges for women in these domains. Dr. Rutherford talked about strategies for networking and self-promotion.
WiHS Fall Event 2016
WIHS hosted Dean of the School of Medicine at UC Davis, Dr. Julie Freischlag at the fall 2016 event. She presented a seminar entitled, “The Profile of an Academic Leader” and met after the seminar with Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences Faculty Affairs, Dr. Vivian Reznik, as well as the WIHS Committee representatives. Dean. Freischlag’s wit and disarming delivery made for an excellent talk which garnered praise from committee members and attendees. During the second day of her visit, Dean Freischlag met with individual faculty and groups, including Dr. Bryan Clary, the Women in Surgery group (7), Dr. Antonio De Maio, and the Dean of Medical Education, Dr. Mia Savoia. Dr. Freischlag was re-invited to our campus last October to discuss gender equity in leadership in UCSD Health Sciences.

The negotiation expert and Professor of Business Law at the University of San Diego, Dr. Linda Barkacs presented a talk entitled "Negotiation: Best Practices for Getting What you Want". The event was held at the UC San Diego Faculty Club and has gathered faculty, graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, residents and fellows in Health Sciences.
WiHS Fall Event 2015
The second WIHS fall reception was held in September 2015 with keynote speaker Dr. Donna Ferriero, Professor and Chair of the Pediatrics Department and Physician-in-Chief of the UC San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital. Dr. Ferriero has held leadership positions, including Past President of the American Pediatric Society and Past President of the Child Neurology Society, and was also elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Similar to Dr. Travis, Dr. Ferriero met with faculty and trainees throughout the day prior to the evening reception at the Faculty Club, and her talk was provocatively entitled, “Leaky Pipes, Glass Ceilings, Changing Landscapes, Time to Renovate the Academic House”. The event was very well attended, with 86 faculty attending the event. The event was well received and attendees found the talk to be very useful.

Inaugural Women in Health Sciences Invited Lecture
The first ever WIHS event, the Inaugural Women in Health Sciences Invited Lecture, was held on August 8, 2014. The speaker Dr. Elizabeth Travis, Associate Vice President for Women and Minority Faculty Inclusion and Mattie Allen Fair Professor in Cancer Research at the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Travis gave a talk on the subject of mentorship and sponsorship.
